A Summer in Crete
First - Happy New Year to all of you!
Apologies for the lack of blogging - for a while life has been filled with ups, downs and hairpin bends. Nothing life threatening, but a lot to think about. 21st century communication takes on the dimensions of the blind person and the elephant. We pick up fragments of other lives according to which message in a bottle we pick up out of the electronic sea, in my case FB and Instagram. So some of you have felt a part of the elephant that is my life; some of you might have a more complete picture.
The reason for the mail is that we are desperately seeking cat sitters for the summer in Crete. Let’s say more-or-less 2 months, around mid-June to mid-August or perhaps July to mid-September. We are negotiable. We are hoping to find someone who is happy to take on the whole period, but we could perhaps split it into two.
We are offering our spacious apartment, a few minutes walk from the small town / summer resort of Kissamos; a few more minutes and you are at the sea. You would be living in the apartment and companion to one charming, playful and sociable apartment cat. There are several balconies, so you and he can enjoy the outdoors too. We have a bike and a car that you can use; scooters, e-bikes available in town. Kissamos is around an hour from Chania airport - flights in summer from several UK airports. The apartment is well equipped and comfortable with A/C.
I think that this would really suit someone who wants a quiet summer with some gentle beach life, walking etc. Writing, and painting are good options, and I should mention that I have an impressive collection of yoga equipment that you can use.
There is one double bedroom with a double bed, 2 bathrooms, one with shower, one with bath, large living / dining/ kitchen area with 2 convertible sofas and one leather sofa, TV. 2 desks. the yoga room has an iMac and yoga props. The south facing balcony has a large table; the north facing (bedroom) balcony has a comfortable outdoor sofa, chairs and tables.
One caveat - bear in mind that summer temperatures here can easily be in the mid-30s and higher if there’s a heatwave. There are fabulous beaches nearby, and many walks.
The Greeks have learned that the best way to handle these days is to get up early, do anything you want to do outdoors before 11am, go indoors and after lunch have a ‘quiet time’ from 2pm until 5pm. This might include a nap! Local people close doors and shutters. The summer evening here is fabulous, warm and soft. Tavernas etc are open well into the night, and shops open in the evening from around 5-9pm. Our local mini-market never closes! Around 6pm is a great time to go to the beach, followed by a glass of something cool and a Greek salad. Eating out here is inexpensive.
I will stop there before I talk myself into staying! Do get in touch if this would suit you, or you know someone who might like this sort of break. The only thing we ask is that the potential sitter/s are prepared to commit within a couple of weeks - we have to be sure of dates before we make any travel arrangements. Please email or WhatsApp me for more details, or anything more you would like to know.
